5 of the Most Spine Tingling Quotes in Horror Movie History

Words can be scary

Ever watch a horror movie where a line is spoken that just sends a chill down your spine? Makes you think? Just genuinely disturbs you with the implications? Well, try these ones on for size.

1. Poughkeepsie Tapes (never released) “…He’ll be there”

This was a mockumentary about a serial killer who is never captured. He is proven to be extremely smart and to have killed dozens of people. And he is never caught. Towards the end of the film, an FBI agent has this to say:

“I know one place we’ll be watching. If this documentary thing you’re making ever gets to the theaters, he won’t be able to help himself. He’ll see this movie as many times as he can. We’ll keep an eye on as many screenings as we can because… he’ll be there.”

Now, the movie never did make it to theaters, so sadly the genius of this line never came to fruition. But imagine it had. Imagine you are sitting in a dark theater watching this movie filmed in a factual manner about a evil, deadly killer who is still at large. And you are told that. Think about it. Those strangers sitting on either side of you. How much do you know about them? Seriously, I have goosebumps.

2. Halloween (1978) “I met this six year-old child…”

Halloween. The film that set the tone for an entire decade. Progenitor of the entire slasher genre. And actually a very chilling movie in some aspects. My favorite character is Dr. Sam Loomis. He gives a very eerie analysis of Michael Myers that tells us there is more to what is going on than may at first meet the eye:

“I met him, fifteen years ago; I was told there was nothing left; no reason, no conscience, no understanding; and even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, of good or evil, right or wrong. I met this six-year-old child, with this blank, pale, emotionless face, and the blackest eyes… the devil’s eyes. I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up because I realized that what was living behind that boy’s eyes was purely and simply… evil.”

Donald Pleasance delivers the lines perfectly and they carry such weight that we can only wonder at what things this man has seen…

3. The Conjuring (2013) “Want to play a game…”

Imagine following a sound through your home late at night. It leads you to the basement. You go down and the door shuts behind you. The lights turn out. And behind you in the dark you hear a mockery of a child’s voice.

“Want to play a game of hide and clap?”

This. Was. Chilling. In this case, of course, it is not so much a matter of what was said as the circumstances during which it is said. But that’s just part of the movie magic. After all, it’s not a radio drama. It’s a film. So, all of your sensory input comes into play when determining the impact of a line. And to follow it up with those hands coming out of the dark over her shoulder to clap right in her ear? We are talking sanity-threatening levels of fear if that happened to you or I, aren’t we?

4. Event Horizon (1997) “Save yourself…”

Some people hate this movie for some reason. I thought it was creepy as hell. And one of the creepiest lines?

“I thought it said “liberate me” – “save me.” But it’s not “me.” It’s “liberate tutame” – “save yourself.” And it gets worse. There – I think that says “ex inferis.” “Save yourself… from hell.””

Well, that clears some things up… and probably caused everyone in the room to shit themselves in unison. Hell of a mix up. Even more disturbing is when we see that visual that audio goes to…

5. Jeepers Creepers II (2003)

The Jeepers Creepers films have all sorts of creepy moments in them. Now, I picked 2 over 1 because they both have a very similar lines, but I like how it was done in 2 more in this dialogue between the dead Darry and protagonist Minxie…

“Every 23rd spring, for 23 days it gets to eat.”

“Eat what?”

“Eat us.”

Well, congrats. You are all boned. Few times before has a denouncement of a variation of “you are screwed” been uttered in such a chillingly blunt manner.
