Before the world of superior home consoles and online gaming, there were these wonderful places called pinball arcades that people used to love!
First appearing in the 1930’s pinball machines were immediately used as opportunities for branding everything from sports to popular culture.
In the 1970’s the pinball machine gained the ability to feature soundbites from films and television. Combined with bright lights and exciting sounds, companies knew the market could be capitalized on if machines were developed with characters that were familiar to young people.
The horror genre became a focus.
Arcades become a showcase for both classic and modern monsters to be featured in pinball machines.
Companies like Midway built an empire off these machines, one quarter at a time. The Twilight Zone machine is one of the highest grossing pinball machines ever.
Even with the decline of arcades across America since the late 1990’s, horror pinball machines continued to be manufactured well into the millennium.
Many are difficult to find, extremely valuable, and sought after worldwide by collectors.
