Retro horror seems to be gaining a lot of steam these days. Can’t say I blame the filmmakers. Modern studio horror, for the most part, sucks. Still, a lot of work and vision is required to pull off a good retro horror film. Previously, I had reviewed retro-slasher Bastard and dubbed it the most effect retro film for capturing the feel and rawness of the late 70’s to early 80’s horror. Chronologically, The Barn captures the period directly after: the hard-rocking horror of the mid to late 80’s.
The Barn is about group of high schoolers who ignore the town legend of the local barn and unwittingly summon three demons: the Boogeyman, Hallowed Jack, and Candycorn Scarecrow. The demons go on a rampage, as demons tend to do, and it’s up to the Halloween-obsessed Sam and Josh and their friends to put a stop to them.
I honestly cannot find a flaw with this film. The filmmakers set out to do something and did it perfectly. Everything from settings, to props, clothes, all of it is perfect retro. Hell, during a few scenes we are even treated to a pretty damn good metal soundtrack. The cover is even made up to look like a beat up VHS rental, complete with stickers like “Be kind, rewind!” If you miss the 80’s (and c’mon, you know you do) The Barn is a horror flick you can’t pass up!
