Changing Yourself Can Be Scary

Do You Like What You See?

This time of year is a time for change.  It’s the start of a new year.  People see this as a chance to start their lives over.  People often stop and ask themselves: What is my New Year resolution?  People look in the mirror while looking into themselves.  This isn’t an easy task.  Some people realize work needs to be done.  Others are in denial and refuse to change at all.

The reason change is scary because it’s different.  It also involves us facing the fact we migth need to change.  No one wants to admit they have something broken.  We all know we aren’t perfect, yet we don’t want to acknowledge this fact out loud.  If we do, we have to wonder are we brave enough to change our broken parts.  Whatever these flaws may be, we’re used to them.  They’re a part of us and we’ve come to live with them.

One easy fix is to delay the inevitable.  We keep putting off change for as long as we can.  The short term fix is to put it off for tomorrow, next week or even next month.  The fear of failure is another key factor.  We’re terrified to try and fix ourselves because we’re afraid we’ll fail ourselves.  So now you see the flaw that you tried to fix and the fact you failed to fix that flaw.

If you’re afraid to change yourself, you’re not alone.  There are lots of people who are in the same situation.  It may seem lazy, but you don’t have to change overnight.  The worst thing you can do is force yourself to change immediately.  You need to do it in small steps.  Identify what you need to change.  Talk to someone you trust to help you along the way.  You should make a plan to help complete the change.  Is change scary? Yes, it is.  Should you doubt yourself?  No, believe in yourself and good luck.
