Though he may not be a household-horror name like Tom Savini, Dick Smith was the make-up effects mastermind behind many of the biggest films of the ’70s and ’80s. Aside from handling the make-up on the first two Godfather films, Taxi Driver, and The Deer Hunter, Smith’s horror credits include The Exorcist, The Exorcist II: The Heretic, The Stepford Wives, The Sentinel, Altered States, Scanners, and the 1999 remake of House On Haunted Hill. Smith received the Academy Award for his work on Amadeus in 1985.
Dick Smith passed away yesterday, at the age of 92. Though he may be gone, his body of work remains ground-breaking and revolutionary, sure to inspire filmmakers for decades to come.
