Writer/director/producer Alexandre Aja is an international horror heavyweight. The French national practically defined the subgenre New French Extremity with his film HIGH TENSION in 2003; since then, he’s become a powerful force in American horror cinema, having helmed THE HILLS HAVE EYES in 2006, MIRRORS in 2008, and HORNS in 2013 (among others).
Now, in a featurette titled “Behind the Door” Aja discusses aspects of his latest project, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR.
Official Synopsis: A family lives an idyllic existence abroad until a tragic accident takes the life of their young son. The inconsolable mother learns of an ancient ritual that will bring him back to say a final goodbye. She travels to an ancient temple, where a door serves as a mysterious portal between two worlds. However, when she disobeys a sacred warning about never opening that door, she upsets the balance between life and death.
In Behind the Door, Aja explains the role of the Aghori in his film; they’re a sect of Indian mystics who believe they can communicate with the dead. He also describes filming in a thousand-year-old abandoned temple. THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR looks captivating, unnerving, and incredibly original. As a die-hard horror fan, I can’t wait to see this film when it hits theaters in the US on March 4th!
