The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a musical horror comedy film that celebrates the 40th anniversary of its American premier this weekend!

A parody/tribute to early science fiction and horror B Movies, Rocky Horror stared Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Barry Bostwick. Cast members from the original Royal Court Theatre, Roxy Theatre, and Belasco Theatre were featured as well.


Rocky Horror was filmed in the United Kingdom at Bray Studios, and on location at the Oakley Court. Viewers recognized a familiar scene because the Victorian Gothic country house was used by Hammer Film Productions in their horror films during the 1950s-1970s.

On its American release, the film was panned by critics and moved to a midnight feature. Rocky Horror gained a cult following In New York City when people began to return to the Waverly Theater dressed as the characters. This spawned similar performance groups across the entire country.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show has made quite the impact on popular culture. It is also the longest running release in film history. Rocky Horror has never been pulled by 20th Century Fox, and continues to play in cinemas today attracting fans from all over the world.
