Jurassic World: Pic of New Dino! Plus: Plot News!

Behold, the D-Rex!!!

Jurassic World, the upcoming fourth film in the Jurassic Park franchise, is due to hit theaters June 12 next year. We’ve been told about a new dino that causes problems for this fully functioning theme park. Now, we have official word and pics to back this up!

Says director Colin Trevorrow,

“Yes, there will be one new dinosaur created by the park’s geneticists. The gaps in her sequence were filled with DNA from other species, much like the genome in the first film was completed with frog DNA. This creation exists to fulfill a corporate mandate—they want something bigger, louder, with more teeth. And that’s what they get.

I know the idea of a modified dinosaur put a lot of fans on red alert, and I understand it. But we aren’t doing anything here that Crichton didn’t suggest in his novels. This animal is not a mutant freak. It doesn’t have a snake’s head or octopus tentacles. It’s a dinosaur, created in the same way the others were, but now the genetics have gone to the next level. For me, it’s a natural evolution of the technology introduced in the first film. Maybe it sounds crazy, but most of my favorite movies sound crazy when you describe them in a single sentence.”

The creature is called the “D-Rex” and here we finally see what it looks like, rendered in Lego form in future playsets for the movie:

As we can see, this animal is unique in a few ways. It’s very pale in color and has red eyes. I am going to wager that these color choices were made by the geneticists to make it look as aggressive as possible. The pale color of the skin makes the black claws stand out. And the red eyes look just evil! And, as we can see in the pics, this toy was designed with the ability to pic up the Lego people. As you can see, rather than the tiny arms with just two claws that a t-rex would have, the d-rex has large, well developed arms with a thumb and three fingers, allowing it to grasp things. I am going to wager we see this come into play in the film.

A lot of fans do, as Trevorrow suggests, seem to get up in arms about the idea of the series moving away from “real” dinosaurs. I find that reaction absurd. The previous sequels have largely proven that once you’d done “people trapped with dinosaurs,” you need to take it someplace new if you’re going to expand the series.

Frankly, I suspect that they’d have been better served creatively by doing a re-make than making another sequel, but a sequel is what they decided upon, so they might as well do something interesting.

If anything, I don’t think they’re going nearly far enough. I always liked the rumors/leaks about the John Sayles JP4 draft, with intelligent, armed dinosaurs. Doing Jurassic Park sequels has always seemed like a pretty stupid idea to me, and the only real justification I could see was if one was going to go SO far outside the original box as to make a movie that was completely insane.

I think they should be trying to piss off the purists. 🙂

Doesn’t look anywhere near big enough to be anymore interesting than the others. Judging by the (not very satisfying) Lego pictures I’d say they should add 50-65% in both width, height and length to make it interesting.
