Now I know some of these films do not take place on or around Halloween, but I more-so wanted to compile a list of horror films that I found to be the scariest on Netflix. I feel like it takes a lot to scare me, and these ten films succeeded at at least creeping me out and left a lasting effect on me. Yes, I know I may have missed some of your favorites but I wanted to share mine. Check them out below:
The House of the Devil (2009) Synopsis: “College student Samantha Hughes takes a strange babysitting job that coincides with a full lunar eclipse. She slowly realizes her clients harbor a terrifying secret”
Haunter (2013) Synopsis: “In 1985, on the eve of her sixteenth birthday, Lisa discovers that she is stuck in time, living the same day over and over with her parents Bruce and Carol and her little brother Robbie. Soon she learns that they are dead and trapped on the day that they were murdered but she finds that she can contact other people. Out of the blue, a stranger comes to her house telling that he is going to fix the telephone line but indeed to threaten her to stop the contacts. Lisa finds that she is contacting victims of the killer in different timelines including the future, and the killer’s name is Oscar. Will be possible to Lisa to stop the evil Oscar?”
V/H/S (2012) Synopsis: “A POV, found footage horror film from the perspective of America’s top genre filmmakers. A group of misfits are hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house in the countryside and acquire a rare tape. Upon searching the house, the guys are confronted with a dead body, a hub of old televisions and an endless supply of cryptic footage, each video stranger than the last.”
Curse of Chucky (2013) Synopsis: “After the events of Seed of Chucky, Nica, a young woman forced to a wheelchair since birth, has to regroup her sister, Barb and her brother-in-law, Ian for a funeral after the death of her mother. While dealing with Barb, Ian, along with their 5-year-old daughter, Alice; Nica receives an odd package – a creepy doll. After people start showing up dead, the fearless Nica soon suspects that the creepy doll is much more than just a doll.”
Honeymoon (2014) Synopsis: “Young newlyweds Paul and Bea travel to remote lake country for their honeymoon. Shortly after arriving, Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of the night. As she becomes more distant and her behavior increasingly peculiar, Paul begins to suspect something more sinister than sleepwalking took place in the woods.”
Scream (1996) Synopsis: “One year after the death of Sidney Prescott’s (Campbell) mother, two students turn up gutted. When a serial killer appears, Sidney begins to suspect whether her mother’s death and the two new deaths are related. No one is safe, as the killer begins to pick everyone off one by one. Everyone’s a suspect in this case.”
American Mary (2012) Synopsis: “The allure of easy money sends Mary Mason, a medical student, into the world of underground surgeries which ends up leaving more marks on her than her so called ‘freakish’ clients.”
Alien Abduction (2014) Synopsis: “A vacationing family encounters an alien threat in this thriller based on the real-life Brown Mountain Lights phenomenon in North Carolina.”
Devil’s Pass (2013) Synopsis: “The Dyatlov Pass follows a group of American students on a trek to investigate the true life mystery of nine Russian skiers who befell unexplained deaths while skiing in the Russian mountains in 1959. To this day, their deaths have been one of the most bizarre unsolved mysteries of the 20th century.”
The Pact (2012) Synopsis: “As a woman struggles to come to grips with her past in the wake of her mother’s death and the disappearance of her sister, an unsettling presence emerges in her childhood home.”
