More Phrustration for “Phantasm” Phans

“Ravager” will not be released in 2015.

Horror aficionados who attended ScareFest in Lexington, Kentucky, this weekend came away with some awesome memories—unless you’re a Phantasm “Phan”, in which case, you most likely left the convention feeling more despondent than ever about the future of Ravager. “Phranchise” creator Don Coscarelli let slip that the fifth chapter in the Phantasm saga won’t be released until sometime in 2016—at the earliest!

Recap

  • It’s been over 17 months since the now-infamous announcement on Ain’t it Cool News that Phantasm: Ravager would be released: “sooner than you think!” At the time, we were told that the film had been completed.
  • After a news-blackout that lasted over a year, The Phantasm Archives gave Phans their first bit of news in ages last May—and it wasn’t good. At an anniversary screening of the original Phantasm, Coscarelli reveled that Ravager was, in fact, still in post-production and would be released “in the distant future”. In other words, the exact opposite of “sooner than you think!”
  • It was further revealed on The Phantasm Archives last May that Ravager was “looking for a home”—in other words, the film doesn’t have a distributor.
  • Buzz surrounding Ravager surged briefly in August when an “official trailer” was leaked on Vimeo. It was quickly removed, with a clarification that it was not a trailer, but the same “Sizzle Reel” shown to Phans earlier this year at the Texas Frightmare Weekend.

This weekend, Coscarelli revealed that Phantasm: Ravager will not be released until 2016—at the earliest. And, frankly, I’ve had it with the entire situation!

I’m beginning to suspect that Ravager is actually a years-long April Fool’s Day joke that Coscarelli has perpetrated upon his loyal Phans. Does the film even exist?

Perhaps the one-and-only trailer (below) is all we’ll ever see.

In an effort to put Ravager’s current limbo status into proper historical context, the folks at The Phantasm Archives have put together this enlightening little infographic. Yeah, it’s an interesting perspective, but I’m still grumpy about all these delays!

“Sooner than you think” my ass!

We can not even get the original Phantasm on blu ray which is a disgrace and a joke.

The ones that are available on Blu are ridiculously expensive. WTF???

Yeah, they would go through spending money filming all this footage
and putting together all these composite & digital effects shots
just for a big ol’ middle finger April Fool’s prank on the phans…

    Right…

You do realize that even in this day & age, even when you have a built-in
fanbase, it can be hard to get a distributor, right?

Just please stop writing articles on this already. Your self-entitlement
    is just beyond irritating.

You are more then welcome to stop reading my articles regarding Ravager–and all my articles for that matter. I won’t choose my topics based on the demands of 1 cranky reader. My contention has always stemmed from the fact that we were told in March 2014 that Ravager would be released “sooner than [we] think”. I don’t think AIC lied–I think they were mislead. If we’d been told from the start that Ravager would be seen at some vague future date, I’d have nothing to complain about. Filmmakers shouldn’t be misrepresenting the status of their projects just for some press coverage. Also, this article is getting mad traffic, so obviously it’s something a lot of other people are interested in reading. Hey, why not start your own blog? Just sayin’.

Apparently you are unfamiliar with sarcasm. I sincerely doubt that my associate truly believes the whole thing to be a hoax. He is merely frustrated by these continued delays, as are we all. And, yes, if we are so irritating, why, pray tell, are you here reading it?

Yeah, I thought that went without saying. Some folks are just too literal!

There is a blu ray set of the first four films on Amazon for $25, but it’s a region 2 German release. The best way to get a great blu ray of the original is let Scream Factory handle it. They made the Phantasm 2 blu ray a couple of years ago. They’re known for releasing stuff that makes fans happy, with plenty of bonus content.

How is AICN’s assertion that you will see the movie “sooner than you think” in any way the responsibility of the filmmakers?

Are you serious? Are you suggesting that one of the most respected entertainment journalists out there made something up? Of course not! Someone in Coscarelli’s camp released the info to them as an exclusive. That person completely misrepresented the film’s true status. Yeah, it’s AIC’s fault. Ha!

There are a thousand different ways one can interpret “sooner than you think”. If you personally decided that it *must* mean “the filmmakers told Quint that it’s coming out next week”, then that’s kind of on you, not Quint and certainly not Coscarelli and co.

The most logical explanation for the statement is that they told Quint that the movie was already in the can, which it was. Quint took that to mean that it would be released soon, which was his own conclusion. That certainly makes a lot more sense to me than that Coscarelli (who I can assure you from personal experience is truly one of the nicest people in the film industry) decided to personally punk you with vague statements.

But I’ll be hanging out with Eric (aka Quint) next week, so I’ll be sure to ask him.

That would be awesome. I’d love to know who exactly gave AIC the “exclusive” in March 2014, and whether it was misinterpreted. Let me know!

Sooner than you think sometimes just means sooner than anyone ever thought since this series has been gone now and no matter how long it takes this Phan will be here till the end. If it happens..awesome and if it doesn’t then we still have 4 films to watch. Instead of trashing it, maybe you need to think on the lines of man it would be great soon but oh well if its later. Remember one thing, we were never suppose to get another one. There trying to make this for the fans so think on that bud

I never intended to trash the film. Indeed, my frustrations stem from a deep love of Phantasm and the entire franchise. The issue I have is that, at this point, I believe that the filmmakers misrepresented to status of their film in order to get press back in March 2014. Horror journalists like myself jumped on the news and pushed it out onto the interweb. In this sense, some of us feel used to disseminate misinformation, and some of us feel responsible for the frustration many fans are indeed feeling since our hopes were set so high so long ago.

It is frustrating that we have to keep waiting, but the trailer looks good and I’m hoping the film is a worthy follow up. I’m sure it will find a distributor. I am willing to be patient.

The film Im sure will be released, IM sure they want the right distribution so they are waiting for the right deal, By the looks of the trailer the film has been made, patience is a virtue, the Dvd’s are all out of print and expensive except part 2, Bad news is scream Factory wont be releasing 3-or 4 on Blu they cant secure the rights so we’ll have to wait & see. Im just glad I own all 4 films & very much look FWD to V there are posters and shirts for sale on coscareli’s sight so IM sure the film is coming.

I have a bad feeling that the end result of the movie wasn’t what Don Coscarelli wanted. He wanted to turn the directorial reins over to someone else – but I think the completed movie isn’t in line with his original vision. So, post production woes might well be reshoots – for which there’s no money. So they might be scrimping and saving to get the movie changed around somewhat. I actually planned a marathon of the 4 movies for my friends thinking Ravager was coming out in a few months. It is frustrating waiting. I just hope it gets released before…you know…not even going to say it…but the thing we’re all dreading and which gets a little more likely with each passing day.
