Pinpointing the creation of Found Footage is a lot like pinpointing the first slasher movie. It didn’t arise in a vacuum, the basic ideas can all be found in a variety of movies and niches across many decades. The mondo films of Italy, cinéma vérité, documentary and propaganda movies – the many examples can make a list pages long. But if movies like the Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity are the faces of Found Footage, I would argue the first time all the facets that make up those movies could all be found in the same movie is Cannibal Holocaust.
With that in mind I’d like to take half an hour to once again look through this famously infamous exploitation film and pay respect to the man and monster who created it.
