DIRECTOR: Dustin Wayde Mills
CAST: Allison Egan, Joni Durian, Minnie Grey
PLOT: Torture Porn = Art … Take Some Pictures Why Dontcha?!
Is it possible that tired old bondage and torture porn could be reinvigorated and made new? Dustin Wayde Mills answers with a resounding “yes!” His evidence is the recently released secret film project THE HORNET’S STING AND THE HELL IT’S CAUSED. First, the most striking thing about this film, what stands out the most, is the gorgeous visual palette. This is a BEAUTIFUL movie! The cinematography is minimalism made lush, neon meets sepia, symbolically speaking … but not entirely. Along with the cinematography, HORNET’S STING trots out top tier composition, making some horrors all the more horrifying, not with FX (though these are well-done) so much as carefully considered visual methods of presenting the violence, sometimes making more with less, hiding to exacerbate. The score also lends great amounts of atmosphere and dread, heightening some scenes from mere shock to elevated terror built on heady unease. It goes without saying that Mills has populated his film with beautiful ladies sans clothes, and has orchestrated a tight story to house his bloody erotica. The psychological edge of the film keeps pace with the visceral side of things. His primary victim is strong and believable, and sympathetic, but his antagonist torturer/killer/artist is even more interesting. And the photography motif is beautifully played, an integral part of the film that opens up so many avenues to creative cinematic expression, avenues Mills is adept enough to use skillfully. THE HORNET’S STING AND THE HELL IT’S CAUSED is a wicked and wickedly beautiful film, another notch in this director’s belt. He’s batting a hundred percent so far. If I fucked up that sports analogy, too bad. I don’t like sports.
