PLOT: Anthology of found footage fear

IHMO:

V/H/S: VIRAL is a pretty damn distinctive bit of found footage cinema. It stands out from its two predecessors. It isn’t superior, but different. Different how would be hard to say except that it doesn’t set its wraparound in the house as the first two films. It’s a style thing. This is the third flick in a franchise in retro love with inferior formats – contrary to claims by hipster videophiles. Sure, DVDs are superior, but I do understand the nostalgia. I appreciate it keenly. I grew up in the VHS rental era and there are many fond memories tied up in that time and place. And I have a not entirely rational preference for DVDs to Blu-Rays oftentimes. At any rate, this completer of the great found footage trinity is a bravo third act, keeping quality alive and also growing in new directions. Exceptionally stylish and sporting some original storytelling – and in one case an original twist on a classic motif – VIRAL is an exciting, energetic film that finds ways to be particularly kinetic and flourishy while remaining faithful to its faux footage motif. A magician turns to the dark side, which both boosts his career – and ends it. A man builds a portal to a mirror universe, with results as disturbing as they are shocking. Skaters fend off black magic zombies. Garage tech meets vicious videos. And then there’s the wraparound, which is compellingly elliptical. V/H/S: VIRAL is a fulfilling follow-up to two equally awesome forerunners.

I really liked the first 2 for their bravery and originality. I’m looking forward to checking this out!
