In case you missed it, the hit horror franchise, SAW, is returning! As previously reported, filming is set to start September 12th and end October 21st. But NOW words out the directors are locked down! According to Fangoria, Michael and Peter Spierig have been locked down to direct the eighth sequel. The Spierig brothers (Undead, Daybreakers, Predestination), were previously attached to direct Winchester Mystery House’ which has been in development for years, but judging from SAW’s Fall shoot, it’s safe to say that [Winchester] will be put on the back-burner for a bit longer. The SAW franchise has been on an 6 year hiatus since the 2010 release of SAW The Final Chapter’ which also marked the end to the franchise’s “every October there’s another” tradition.

As previously reported Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger (Piranha 3D, Piranha 3DD, Sorority Row) are locked as writers with franchise co-creators James Wan and Leigh Whannel acting as executive producers.

As this story develops we’ll keep you tuned. Even though no word has been said about the SDCC having any SAW panels [of my knowledge], I’ll keep an eagle eye for anything current [i.e casting and/or plot updates]. Here’s an interesting factoid, the SAW franchise was dubbed “The Most Successful Horror Franchise” by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2010 for its grossing of $733,271,976  between its 7 films. SAW also marks the first collaboration of co-creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell, who together wrote the screenplay. The duo went on to create the successful Insidious franchise. Wan is also responsible for the instant classic The Conjuring franchise. Wan is also behind the upcoming Lights Out.

The SAW movies followed a dying man, nicknamed the Jigsaw Killer, enlisting goons donning black cloaks and pig mask to kidnap all the people that one way or another did him wrong. When the man, John Kramer (also know as The Jigsaw Killer), had his victims, he would strap a life threatening device to their unconscious bodies, when they awoke they’d be greeted by a tape recorder enlisting to them their rules to survive. Each film’s challenges get even more grueling as the film’s characters are forced to cut off limbs, cut open fellow human beings or even pull keys from inside them-self…to survive.
