If you grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, then this is exciting news indeed. The independent publishing giant IDW will be releasing two brand new comics based on the Garbage Pail Kids and Edward Scissorhands before the end of the year.
If you’ll remember, Garbage Pail Kids was the totally irreverent, disgusting-enough-to-get-you-grounded series of trading cards produced by Topps in the mid-80’s (and also the stars of their own 1987 movie – which flopped). The Kids were designed as a parody of the popular Cabbage Patch Dolls of the day. Each card featured artwork depicting some hapless youngster blowing up (Adam Bomb), pulling off his own skin (Peeled Paul), maybe getting decapitated (GuilloTINA), or something else that would turn your parents’ stomachs. In a word, Garbage Pail Kids were awesome.
The new comic series featuring the demented, little meat bags is set for release in 2015, just in time for the Kids’ 30th anniversary. So far, Peter Bagge (Hate) is connected to the upcoming book, but some of the original Garbage Pail Kids artists are rumored to be participating as well.
On a lighter, more gothy note, the titular character of Tim Burton’s 1990 tear-jerker Edward Scissorhands will be starring in his own IDW comic this Halloween. Set two decades after the end of the original movie, the comic picks up with Kim’s granddaughter (Kim was portrayed by Wynona Ryder) investigating the existence of Edward, whom she’d always believed was only a bedtime story.
I’m not ashamed to tell you that the ending of Edward Scissorhands always destroys me. Suffice to say, I’m pleased we’ll be seeing more of our sad-eyed, scissor-handed hero. I just never liked the idea of him up in that big, dark castle, all alone. Hopefully series writer Kath Leth gives poor Edward a break. The new title will also feature art from Drew Rausch and is debuting in October 2014.
