Is a Ghost in the Shell movie finally gaining traction?

One film's term in development hell may be approaching an end

For those not up on your manga and anime, Ghost in the Shell is a series about a special task force called Public Security Section 9 and their pursuit of a cyber-criminal known as the puppeteer. The series is a cyberpunk favorite which has been adapted into animated films, manga, and video games.

Back in 2008, Dreamworks and Steven Spielberg picked up the rights to make a live action adaptation. Avi Arad and Steven Paul were set to produce and Jamie Moss (Street Kings) was said to be set to write the screenplay. A year later, October, 2009 to be exact, Jamie Moss was replaced as writer by Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island). And then nothing. For five years, no word of any progress. This year though, it looks like the film may be showing some signs of life. January 24, 2014 saw the news that Rupert Sanders (aka guy who cheated on his wife with Kristen Stewart) is now set to direct a screenplay written by William Wheeler (The Hoax). Most recently, it has come to light yesterday (September 3) that actress Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall St) is in talks for the lead role.

This thing might just get made after all! Anyone else excited for this?
